Her passion is for empowering women to ask questions and get accurate answers. Because of this, she has consulted for high profile clinical trials and endometriosis, fibroids and infectious disease, as well as other women's health issues like breast and cervical cancer. This gives her a unique approach. Having had her feet both in the medical and natural world, Dr. Alicia supports both patients and clients all over the world through her well respected supplement line, luxury health and wellness retreats, books, live events, digital courses and the Root podcast where she talks about all things women's health.

Wow, you must be a busy lady. I am. Thank you for that introduction. Every time I'HEAR that, I'm like o yeah, I do all that youably right? Yes, yes.

Thank you. Yes. So Dr. Alica, maybe you talk about earlier in life when you were getting into this space and kind of maybe what were some of the catalyzing events that caused you to be who you are today? Yeah.

So one of the major things that happened to me, I've had a couple times, I think a lot of times when for those of us that are passionate about health, we've struggled with our own health issues. And for me, one big major time in my life was many years ago and my children were young, two and three years old and it would be Sunday afternoon and there I am asleep on the couch, you know, and, and it wasn't even my couch. I would be going to hang out with friends after church and then as soon as I sat down, I would fall asleep and I was exhausted all the time. And it wasn't just on Sunday afternoons, it would be on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and I would push through my day. Patients do all the things that I needed to do, but I would just wanted to get my kids in bed so that I could go to sleep.

So I was exhausted all the time. I had headaches and neck pain and all these weird things happening in my body, Hormonal issues, digestion issues, and all of these health issues were really holding me back from excelling in my career, from being a good mother, from being a good wife, all of those different types of things that were very important to me. But it was really my health that I realized was being impacted. And although I was a doctor, you know, which is kind of embarrassing, I was taking care of everyone else but not taking care of myself at the same time. So that's what led me to really get involved in root cause medicine.

I met another doctor who basically took me underneath their wing and started helping me understand what was going on in my body and get to the root cause of those issues. Did you start out in traditional medicine and then kind of worked your way to functional? Was that your journey or was there? You know, my career has been so interesting because I originally studied as a dc, so a doctor of chiropractic went to school for that. And then I had a private practice doing that.

And then I transitioned into pharmaceutical research. So I've spent a lot in both worlds, very natural, doing things holistically. And then I became a consultant for, as you read in my bio, for high profile clinical trials. So endometriosis, fibroids, women's health issues like canc, all of that. So I spent a big portion of my career doing that.

And then I ended up having a miscarriage around 17 weeks. And I was traveling every single week on a flight going somewhere around the country, working. And when that happened to me, it. That would be another pivotal point for me. It really jolted me.

My husband and I had been trying for this baby. And then, you know, 17 weeks, you're pretty far along, right? That's really late to lose one. So it caused me to pause. And I'm the type of person that really, I give a six week notice, you know, like, I'm gonna make sure all my T's are crossed, I'are doted, everything's in place.

And for me, I did wrap everything up, but I literally was like, I have to stop and I have to refocus on my health again. A lot of times is an up and down journey. And that's what caused me to go back into functional medicine and then basically spend my life helping women struggling with similar issues. Wow. So talk about you Know, we're hoping to have several thousand registered for the summit.

So there's gonna be a lot of women. And what would be that?

Most likely, you know, age range? It sounds like female. What's the typical age range? And then maybe what are their pain points that you see frequently over and over and over to help everybody watching this summit who may have a wife or they may be a woman themselves would want to send somebody to you? Yeah, it's the main group of women are demographic that I would say that are drawn to me or attracted to me or, you know, I'm here to serve.

It's typically women ages 35 to 55, maybe a little older. And what they're struggling with is really having very low energy, you know, feeling like they're dragging through their day, trouble losing weight. So they've tried lots of different things, and they have stubborn weight that they cannot get off, and then other hormonal imbalances. Got it. That makes a lot of sense.

And probably, like you, they arrived at 40, 50 years old, taking care of everybody but themselves. Yeah. Yeah. Because that was my own journey. How I got into what I do is that I spent 30 years doing that, and I hit 50, and I was a mess and realized I got to start taking care of me.

And the cool thing is, though, is what you learn. I had another speaker say, we are the medicine, which I really love that quote. We are the medicine. I took ownership of my health instead of outsourcing it to Blue Cross from a decision what. What will happen to me and what won't happen to me.

Right. And what I realized was, is that when I take care of me, everybody and everything around me gets better. It's not a selfish thing, actually. It's Actually, it helps everybody. So when you bring someone into your process, can you kind of walk the audience, give them an idea?

What's the process like of working with Dr. Alicia? Absolutely. So some people come to us just through directly booking consultations with us, and then some employers will hire us on to work with their executive team because they know the impact that it has on their bottom line. So, but regardless, what we do is we start with a consultation. It's typically 90 minutes. So we're spending time with you. This isn't a quick, you know, see the doctor seven, eight minutes. You know, we're really able.

We have you fill out some very comprehensive forms that are looking at all areas of your life, and we look at all of that before we even. Even get on the call with you. There's Some surveys we have, you do some analysis that we do on those surveys and then we're spending time with you understanding how this is impacting you. You know, how it's impacting not just your own health, but like you said, it spreads out to everyone, right? So how it's impacting your family or your finances or your relationships and then setting goals is a big part of that.

So we've got to know where we're going and headed in the future. So we start there and then typically we move into some type of root cause lab work that may be some functional, functional medicine lab panels. We may be looking at what's going on with the gut, Hormones, toxins. It's really personalized to that person, what they need. And then from there they work with us one on one.

So it's not just me. I have a team of people that we work with. So we have your nutrition, your diet, your dietitian that's working with you, someone that's working with you on Mindset. That's a really big area. A lot of times women will feel like I am killing it in other areas of my life.

Right. And their career and all these other places. But then their health is where they're struggling with. So we're helping to understand like you can be successful here too. So we're basically just providing all the tools that they need in order to do that.

Do you think that it's really interesting you can have a 50 year old who's like the CEO of a company and she doesn't have confidence about managing down her weight or some other issue. Do you find that? Because I know you find that at Tiger with a lot of men and some of the women we have, they have lacd, complete lack of confidence and belief that they can change their health. Yes, absolutely. And I think a lot of times there's a level of overwhelm too with the amount of information that's out there.

So we often say, like Dr. Google, I'm sure you've heard that, you know, they are researching, they want to know, they want to understand. And what they enjoy with working with us is that we do the heavy lifting of really identifying that personalized medicine of what they need. So it's not cookie cutter. And then because of that we're able to get them the results that they need.

But I think that a lot of times it's just information overload. I don't even know what works for me anymore. What we used to work for me in my 20s or even 30s is not working for me now in my 40s and 50s. So. Absolutely.

And I think it's, it really is impacting with that confidence that's not always just admitted out front, you know, but get, we get personal with our clients and we're that safe space for them to be able to talk about how this's really impacting their lives. So one question I would love to hear you share your answer on that I think would help the audience is, you know, they have insurance through their business, their employer, and sometimes I'll get the question for me even is like, hey, I've got this and I've got a doctor locally, my primary care doctor. Help me understand why I should forego the insurance coverage, not work with my primary and work with you as a second doctor and pay cash out of my pocket. Help me understand that.

Well, first you have to understand what's really going on with insurance and what it's designed for.

So insurance is going to cover, for instance, with your blood work, critical markers that get you to a diagnosis, and then from that diagnosis you're going to receive a drug or a surgery. So that is, that is the flow, that's the roadmap there. So if you're wanting to go another route, then insurance would not be a way, in fact, Medicare, who pretty much sets the guidelines for all insurance companies, even if it's, you know, you don't have Medicare yet, but you've got Blue Cross, Blue Shield or United Healthcare, Humana or any of those.

What they say is that a treatment plan that seeks to prevent disease, promote life or enhance or prolong the quality of your life is deemed not medically necessary. So it's not going to be covered because it's not deemed necessary until you have the diagnosis of diabetes or now you have cancer, or now, you know, you've had a heart attack, or you've ended up with these awful debilitating things.

That's when insurance comes in and helps. Just like with your car, if you, if you get in a car accident and now you've got these major things happening, insurance is going to come and say, okay, we're going to go ahead and repair that fender. Okay, it looks like this window broke. We're going to do all of that, but they're not going to take care of your oil changes, they're not going to rotate your tires, they're not going toa clean the radiator and all those different types of things. Right?

Very well said. And it's really crazy to think that things that would prevent Things from happening are not covered. You know, like dentists have been selling prevention for 100 years and they're really good at it. And people pay cash for a lot of stuff because dental insurance, I don't know if anybody's ever determine if it's even worth getting because it's just a push between what you spend and what you pay in premiums and what you get. But no, that's really well said.

I think that the mindset is I do not want to wait until I'm sick to start addressing this problem. And by virtue of what you do, you attend to it. You, you're going to attract people who are more high achiever, successful people. And they don't operate that way. They operate with how do I get ahead of anything I'm doing?

And do it proactively. So what are some of the challenges your clients have as they go through probably a year process with you? So we try to, what we do is whenever we find that our clients are needing. So for instance, before with our nutrition, it's very personalized to what they need. You know, not everybody needs, you know, going down all the diet, you know, a keto or Mediterranean or Paleo, you know, different things like that.

Right. We can really personalize what they need to eat. But then sometimes, especially if you're a high achiever, then it becomes like, okay, but I'm always on the road, I'm traveling, you know, doing things like that, you know. So we really work with our clients. Some they may have people that come in and cook their food.

So we work with them, providing the recipes, all of those things that they would need in order to make the meals. We work with meal service companies. So, okay, do we just need to get your meals delivered or sometimes people are like, I just need, like tell me what I need to get from the grocery stores, meal plans, all of those different types of things.

But the other thing is, that's really important is that we really teach you how to eat, you know, so that if you are out and you're able, you know, we're going to go to a restaurant, you're able to choose things from the menu that nourish your body. But then also we don't do things that are extremely restrictive either because we're all going to live, there's going to be birthday parties, there's going to be celebrations, there's going to be nights out.

So we really try to work with our clients in a way that makes it feasible for them to have long term success. We always Say we want you to be consistently good, not occasionally perfect. You know, so you just went 10 days and you did everything perfect and then, you know, fell off. We want, we're really creating more of a lifestyle. So whatever really works for our clients and what they're needing and their lifestyle, that's what we help accommodate.

And what kind of habits are you trying to build into their life too? Because I'm assuming that it's, it's, you know, you're doing the intake, you're doing the functional testing. You're looking for those root cause underlying mechanisms that are driving their symptoms. You're addressing them. Supplementation, it might mean a little bit of medication, but I'm sure it involves lifestyle change as well that has to go with it.

What are some of the big ones you guys really emphasize? Well, believe it or not, stress is a big one that we really emphasize the mental, emotional stress and really how to exp. Understand stress resiliency. So when you think about stress happening, think about go. You're in a boat and you're going down this river, but the banks are really close together so you're like bumping up.

That's like stress and life. So what we want to do is we want to widen that river, widen your ability to adapt and handle stress in your body physiologically, like your hormones. Women are very different in their hormones and the changes that we go through, whether you're cycling or you're not cycling anymore, but we want to open up that your ability to handle that stress. So we want to widen that river. So because life is still going to happen, but we need you to your body to be able to adapt.

So we really focus on that. We focus on detoxification, we focus on nutrition and then targeted supplementation as well. And explain targeted supplementation and why that's important versus what normal people do with supplementation. So a lot of times people may find themselves at the computer and they're like, what should I take for constipation? Or what should I take for low energy?

You know, they're just googling anding. A lot of times they're guessing. So one thing is that we say test, don't guess. So that's why we do the functional testing, is we want to find out what's going on with you. And when we have those root causes, then we're able to address that with supplementation.

So it's very targeted to what's going on with you versus like, well, my friend took this over here and you know, her skin cleared up or her hair growing back or, you know, she's able to go poop now. You know, all those things versus, like. And then you wonder why it didn't work for you. Well, it wasn't what you needed. So that's what.

Targeted supplementation. That's how people end up taking 17 supplements, and they don't understand how they got there. Yes. I'm sure you probably, in many ways help people get on less of them. Because targeted, what you really mean is you're using their labs and going, you need support here.

You need support here, and that's why you're doing it. So it's. They can have confidence. And I don't know, you probably see this. We see it about eight to 12 weeks in when they're on these supplements, they really notice, they feel better because they're getting exactly what their body needs.

Yes. Yes. And we also. I have my own supplement line you may see behind me. Yeah.

What. What we do is we really look at the research. So because I'm like a data geek, research geek, all, you know, my history that, you know. Yes. My background and physically my background as well.

But we were really looking at what's inside of the supplement and what the research has shown. So, for instance, a lot of people know that berberine helps with blood sugar and things like that, but there's a specific amount of that. And then when you add alpha lipoic acid to it, how does that help the body? So that's really important. And just one little thing about supplements in general that I had recently learned.

There's something called window dressing, and that's basically where you, you know, you pick up a supplement and you're like, oh, it has ashwagandha in it. Ashwagandha is good for me, you know, or it's got chromium or it has something in it. But the amount that's in there is like pixie dust. It's called window dressing because it actually doesn't do anything for you, but it's there as a marketing ploy so that you feel like, oh, I'm taking, you know, XYZ and. But it's not at a dose that is able to move the needle on what you're dealing with.

Got it. Okay, so we got to wrap up. I'm having a talking to you. Is there one other. I mean, is there any one thing you'd love to share with the audience before we go?

And then I obviously want to get, like, how people can find you. Yeah. I think that for those. And men and Women, it's really important for you to invest in your health. You know, we invest in so many other things.

We invest in our businesses, we pour into marketing and business co coaches, we invest in our children, we put them in all types of extracurricular activities because we want to see them grow and expand. But we really got to invest in ourself and our health because really, I had heard a quote one time that said that you can have a thousand problems, but then once you have a health problem, you just have one problem.

And we don't want to get to that point where that has to become your singular focus because it's stopping everything else in your life's well said. And you know, if you're sick, you have no ability really at that point. There's another spin on that quote of a man with his health has a thousand dreams, but the man who loses their health has only one O.

Yeah. And it's the same idea. And you know, if you are sick, you do not have the ability to do any of your other things in your life. And so I think, you know, one of the things we do, and I'm sure you do this in your intake processes. It's so important for people to identify what is important to me, what is it that I want to achieve in life, what are my goals and what's going to happen if I don't change.

And play that out. Tony Robbins talks about that. Get leverage on yourself and go, if I don't change and my health continue to decline, take it all the way to the nth degree and go. What's going to happen? Well, you're either going to die or you're off the chessboard and you're just dealing with being sick.

Yeah. Someone like you is trying to help you not do that. So Dr. Alishia, how do people find you? So you can find me.
